Catholic Wedding Traditions
Attending a Sri Lankan Catholic wedding
We’re so excited to celebrate this special day with all of our family and friends. Whether you’re familiar with Catholic weddings or attending one for the first time, we hope this little guide helps you feel comfortable and welcome.
The Wedding Mass
Our wedding ceremony will be celebrated as a Catholic Wedding Mass, which is a sacred religious service held in church. The Mass will include prayers, hymns, Bible readings, the exchange of vows and rings, and Holy Communion. It may be a little longer than a non-religious ceremony, so we appreciate you joining us for this special and meaningful part of our day.
Church Etiquette
Please arrive 15–20 minutes early so everyone can be seated before the Mass begins.
Kindly keep phones on silent during the service.
The church ceremony is a sacred occasion, so respectful attire is appreciated.
Photography may be limited during certain parts of the ceremony, please follow any guidance from the church or photographer.
If you’re not Catholic, you are absolutely welcome to attend and celebrate with us. Please feel free to simply follow along and participate in the parts you’re comfortable with.
During Holy Communion, practicing Catholics may choose to receive Communion. Guests who are not receiving are warmly welcome to remain seated or come forward for a blessing with your arms across your chest.
